In this caffeine-fueled metropolis, you’ll find an extraordinary ecosystem of roasters, baristas, and café owners who approach their craft with scientists’ precision and artists’ passion. From century-old brick warehouses converted into roasteries to intimate neighborhood cafés tucked away on tree-lined streets, Portland’s coffee scene reflects the city’s unique blend of industrial heritage and modern artisanal culture.

Grab your reusable mug, and let’s explore the places that make Portland a paradise for coffee lovers.

Coffee Houses Near the Portland Eco House

POA Café

4025 N Williams Avenue

POA Café has been keeping things cool on N Williams Avenue since 2014 — literally, “Poa” means “everything is cool” in Swahili. Inspired by a volunteer trip to Tanzania and the belief that it takes a village, this women-owned spot is all about community, healthc, and good vibes. The kitchen skips the bossy hierarchy and works as a team, which might explain why everything tastes so good! The menu delivers comfort in every bite with Bombastic Breakfast Burritos and thick superfood smoothies loaded with adaptogens. Add a big patio and friendly staff, and you’ve got a brunch spot worth getting out of bed for.

Either/Or

4003 N Williams Avenue

What’s the vibe at Either/Or? By day, it’s all about lattes, giant burritos, and brunch cocktails. On weekends, DJs set the tone. By night, it’s a bar and restaurant. Either/Or is the go-to spot for meeting up with friends in Portland, the ideal place to chat, enjoy drinks, and stay warm and dry during the rain.

Roseline Coffee

1725 NE Alberta Street

Has both shaded and sunny outdoor seating in its street-facing courtyard.

321 NE Davis Street

 813 SW Alder Street

222 SW Columbia Street

1015 SE 11th Avenue

Roseline Coffee, started in 2012 by Marty Lopes, is a Portland success story. Marty’s journey into coffee was built on years of hands-on experience, working with top-notch coffee companies before launching Roseline. His goal? To serve amazing coffee without making it feel exclusive. Yes, it is totally accessible! Do you know there is one in Alterba with walking distance from Portland Eco House?

The roasts at Roseline are light to medium, bringing out the best in the beans, and they’re always rotating in fresh, seasonal options. The café’s sleek, minimalist space reflects Portland’s modern coffee culture. With natural light flooding in and a custom brew bar at the center, it’s designed to encourage interaction and showcase their top-tier equipment. Roseline’s coffee program includes rotating single-origin espressos, pour-overs, and seasonal drinks, all crafted with precision.

Proud Mary Cafe

2012 NE Alberta Street

Founded in 2009 by Nolan and Shari Hirte in Melbourne, Australia, Proud Mary blends exceptional coffee with thoughtfully crafted food. Their Portland location offers all-day breakfast, hearty lunches, high-end teas, fresh juices, pastries, and more—using sustainable, ethically sourced, and local ingredients. Although they don’t serve much in the way of vegan food options, they’re serious about coffee, sourcing top-notch beans directly from farmers and roasting them in-house.

Happy Cup Coffee Bar

3494 N Williams Avenue

Right across from New Seasons Groceries, the folks at Happy Cup Coffee Bar  have a mission as bold as their brews. They hire adults with disabilities, lovingly known as “People with Potential,” and give them real jobs with real pay. From bagging and labeling to coming up with those creative blend names, their team makes it all happen. Every sip of their coffee fights workplace inequity and proves that good coffee and good causes are a perfect blend.

But they don’t stop there. Happy Cup goes global, sourcing ethically traded beans from farmers worldwide and batch-roasting them 18 pounds at a time for peak flavor. It’s coffee with heart and soul and just enough caffeine to fuel a better future—one cup at a time. Who wouldn’t drink to that?

Euko Coffee & Company

3290 N Vancouver Avenue

Euko Coffee Company is the kind of spot that makes you want to stay awhile. It’s female-owned and has amazing single-origin coffee, meaning from beans grown within one particular geographic region with its characteristics and specific tastes compared to blended coffees from multiple origins. And the staff couldn’t be friendlier. They’re quick with recommendations and even quicker with your drinks. The space? Bright, earthy, and packed with plants, giving off serious at-home vibes. Their menu is stacked with everything from classic lattes to bold creations like a Maple Pecan iced latte or a not-too-sweet PSL.

Heartbeat Cafe

2899 N Commercial Avenue

Situated inside Emanuel Hospital, which is a 15 minute walk from the Portland Eco House, this cafe is pretty much a grab and go place, convenient for those who have a reason to be at the hospital or those who happen to be in the neighborhood and need to get a coffee and meal way after hours or in the super early morning. Along with coffee, tea, and desserts, it serves a variety of meals and snacks, including vegetarian, vegan, sugar-free, and gluten-free options.

Late owls will appreciate that the place is open seven days a week until 2am, while early risers will appreciate that it re-opens at 5:30am. The coffee and meals can be enjoyed in the hospital’s huge indoor atrium. Its wheelchair accessibility and close proximity to the hospital garage with free parking add to these perks.

Albina Press

4637 N Albina Avenue

A long-time Portland favorite, this spot is known for its laid-back vibe and delicious coffee and baked goods. With big windows and lots of seating both inside and out, it’s a great spot to relax, work, or catch up with a friend. The baristas are friendly and always ready to give great recommendations. Their tea lattes are aromatic, and the pastries are a must-try. The space feels bigger than it looks from the outside, with comfy couches and plenty of tables in the back. It’s a great place to enjoy good coffee and get things done.

The Fresh Pot

4001 N Mississippi Avenue

The Fresh Pot is another long-time Portland institution in the heart of the whole Mississippi scene. Housed in a former pharmacy with a soda fountain counter, it’s a space full of character and an old-school vibe. The interior is featured with vintage furniture and quirky Post-it notes and local arts. Drinks like dirty chai and nitro cold brew are popular, along with baked goods from Farina, including macarons and pop tarts. With plenty of seating, fast internet, and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a welcoming spot for work, catching up, or simply enjoying a well-crafted drink.

Capitola Coffee

4224 N Mississippi Avenue

Capitola Coffee brings together quality coffee, a welcoming vibe, and a sense of community. Their Begonia Blend is a favorite, offering sweet cocoa and jasmine notes from a mix of Ethiopian and Central or South American beans. The baristas know their craft, and the menu has plenty of options, from espresso to honey lavender oat matcha. The spacious interior is great for working or studying, with plenty of outlets, while the large outdoor courtyard patio provides a relaxed, urban setting with bike parking. For food, the walnut pesto toast with ricotta is a must-try.

Bastion Coffee Roasters

4326 N Mississippi Avenue

Bastion Coffee Roasters started as a way for childhood friends Chase and Jasen to stay connected through their shared love of coffee. They began roasting beans at home and soon moved on to selling bags to friends. From there, they joined a few farmer’s markets in outer Portland, and things took off. Now, several years later, their café on Mississippi Avenue is thriving. The space has a friendly vibe, and the coffee is excellent. While you’re out and about, make sure to swing by this cute spot for a coffee.

Alberta Street Coffee

1150 NE Alberta Street

Alberta Street Coffee opened its doors at the end of 2024. Located on the ground floor of a newly developed hotel, this coffee shop replaces a historic home that was unfortunately torn down. Alberta Street Coffee stands out for its well-crafted coffee and commitment to eco-conscious choices. They offer vegan milks, aligning with Portland Eco House’s mission to support sustainable, plant-based living. With its focus on inclusivity and environmental impact, this spot adds another vegan-friendly option to the growing list of Portland establishments dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint.

Case Study

1422 NE Alberta Street

Case Study Coffee is right next door to the Tin Shed in Alberta district. They offer a comfy, welcoming space for coffee lovers to enjoy expertly crafted drinks. The coffee is top-notch, especially their seasonal lattes — like the Bergamot White Chocolate with cracked pepper, which sounds a bit wild but tastes amazing, almost like a grown-up version of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. The space is small, but it’s perfect for grabbing a quick coffee or hanging out for a bit. They’ve also got vegan milk options, which makes it a great fit for anyone looking for a more sustainable, plant-based option.

Extracto

NE Killingsworth Street

Extracto’s mission is simple: they want you to love your coffee as much as they love it. Every coffee they carry is carefully selected after tasting many varieties from around the world, ensuring only the ones that resonate with them make the cut. Once chosen, they roast each coffee in small batches on their cherished 1951 cast iron roaster, fine-tuning the flavors through careful smelling and tasting until it’s just right. The result is a wide selection of exceptional coffees, from classic profiles to more unique blends.

Jet Black Coffee Company

NE 42nd Avenue

NE 30th Avenue

Jet Black Coffee Company is a Portland favorite that blends music, friendship, and great coffee into one welcoming spot. Founded by Karla and Travis, two long-time friends from the South who now call the Pacific Northwest home, the café’s name comes from a nod to one of Travis’ favorite bands, Jawbreaker. Music is everywhere in the space, and you’ll even find little tributes to the band, like their signature coffee blend, Dear You. Plus, they serve a lot of vegan pastries from local spots like Shoofly Vegan Bakery and Sweetpea Baking Company. With bright windows, high ceilings, and thriving plants, Jet Black is a great place to enjoy good food, good drinks, and good vibes.

Hypnos Coffee

3761 North Williams Avenue

Hypnos Coffee has quickly become a local favorite with its beautiful Parisian-style design and amazing coffee. The café has a warm, clean vibe that makes it a great place to hang out. Their menu is full of creative drinks like the Bonbon Mocha, Chestnut Latte with Cold Foam, and seasonal flower lattes made with house-made syrups. The flavors are subtle and pair perfectly with the coffee. People love the friendly staff, too, who are always happy to make recommendations. Whether you’re grabbing a matcha or a blackberry latte, you’re in for a treat.

The Great North

2909 NE Alberta Street

The Great North is part of an expanding chain with locations in Portland and Seattle. They started in 2016 with one goal: to give the people of St. Johns, and now Alberta Street, a coffee shop that truly reflected their neighborhood. They focus on serving great coffee and creating experiences that make everyday life a little better. The team behind The Great North is dedicated to hard work and enjoying every moment, without any need for flashy extras. As a local Pacific Northwest business, they care as much about where their coffee comes from as they do about who they’re serving.

TwentySix Café

2723 NE 7th Avenue

TwentySix Café in Irvington is a great place to relax after checking out the neighborhood’s historic homes. It’s a little off the beaten path, next to a tobacco shop and beauty parlor, but it has a lot to offer. The service is friendly, and they serve coffee from Terrain, including a tasty oat milk chai latte and a smooth matcha latte with perfect foam. The bagels are also a hit. There’s a nice patio out back for when you want to enjoy your drink outside. The café has a warm, local feel, and the staff really connects with the regulars, making it a welcoming place to hang out or get some work done.

Other Fine Coffee Shops in Portland

Coava Coffee Roasters

1300 SE Grand Avenue  (A)

2631 SE Hawthorne Blvd

1015 SE Main Street

Coava Coffee PortlandCoava Coffee Roasters started in Matt Higgins’ garage in 2008. Despite the humble beginning, Coava has become one of Portland’s most respected coffee spots. The name “Coava” comes from the Turkish word for “green coffee,” a nod to Higgins’ belief that great coffee starts with selecting the right raw beans. And they’ve been doing just that, growing from garage to global fame.

The flagship location on SE Grand Avenue is a sight to behold. It’s housed in a bamboo warehouse that’s somehow both industrial and homey. High ceilings, exposed brick, and plenty of natural light make it feel like the kind of place where you can sip a latte, lose track of time, and feel like you’re in the middle of a Portland design magazine. The brew bar is the real showstopper. It’s custom-built, so you can watch the baristas work their magic, turning beans into liquid gold.

What really makes Coava stand out is their no-compromise approach to coffee. They’re not the kind of place that throws 50 different beans at you. Instead, they focus on a smaller, handpicked selection of single-origin coffees, working closely with farms to ensure top-notch quality and sustainable practices. They even pay above-market prices to get the best beans. Roasting? It’s an art form. Each bean is roasted to perfection on a vintage Probat roaster. And if you’re a coffee geek, you’ll love Coava’s contributions to brewing tech — like the Kone filter, which has become a go-to for pour-over enthusiasts everywhere.

Courier Coffee Roasters

923 SW Oak Street

Courier Coffee Roasters PortlandFounded in 2007, Courier Coffee Roasters is one of Portland’s best examples of micro-roastery success. What started with Joel Domreis delivering fresh coffee by bike to a few loyal customers has now grown into a major name in the city’s coffee scene. Despite its success, the company has stayed true to its roots, focusing on sustainability, personal service, and high-quality coffee.

Joel’s journey began with a small air popcorn popper in his apartment, teaching himself the art of roasting. His DIY spirit is at the heart of Courier’s approach: small-batch roasting, medium roasts that highlight natural flavors, and a commitment to freshness with every cup. The café on SW Oak Streetreet is small but full of character. You won’t find flashy décor here, just a minimalist space that’s all about the coffee. The in-house pastries, like their signature cannelés and daily-made cookies, pair perfectly with your cup. Everything is made fresh using local, organic ingredients, and Joel and his team handle all the baking themselves.

Sustainability is also a cornerstone of Courier’s operation. They still deliver by bike for their wholesale accounts, minimize waste with reusable packaging, and partner with eco-friendly coffee farms. In addition to being environmental stewards, they focus on community engagement and education. Whether it’s one-on-one home brewing training or public cupping sessions, Courier is always looking for ways to share their knowledge and deepen their connection with the community.

Electrica Coffee

2181 NW Nicolai Street

Electrica Coffee PortlandElectrica Coffee is a little coffee haven on NW Nicolai Street that does much more than just keep you awake. This café brings together raw industrial style and exceptional drinks, making it a true standout in Portland’s crowded coffee scene. If you’re looking for something beyond the usual espresso shots, Electrica is a refreshing change of pace.

Co-founder Seiji Nanbu’s vision made manifest is to represent his divergent heritage by serving Mexican coffee alongside Japanese tea, likewise with pairing Asian and Latin American pastries and sweets.

The space feels like a warehouse that’s been softened up by home-style touches. Big windows let in a flood of light, while exposed concrete and minimal design give it that industrial charm without feeling cold. There’s just enough greenery to make you feel like you’re sipping coffee in a modern jungle—without the bugs, of course.

The baristas are like coffee scientists, brewing each cup with precision. The rotating selection of single-origin beans keeps things exciting, so you might find yourself sipping on a zesty Ethiopian one day and a smooth Guatemalan the next. And if you’re more of a tea person, don’t worry—Electrica’s tea menu is as thoughtful as its coffee. Plus, in true Portland fashion, Electrica Coffee operates with sustainability at the forefront. Compostable packaging, eco-friendly operations, and a focus on supporting local suppliers are just a few ways Electrica prioritizes the planet. Their efforts reflect a commitment to quality and to their community and environment.

Good Coffee

2175 NW Raleigh Street

1114 NW Couch Street

4747 SE Division Street

1150 SE 12th Street

7000 NE Airport Way

Good Coffee’s mission is simple: serve great coffee without the attitude. With backgrounds at other local roasters, they saw a gap for cafes that balanced top-notch coffee with a welcoming vibe. The name “Good Coffee” says it all—no pretension, just quality.

Good Coffee offers several locations across Portland. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a cup of good coffee while you walk around the city? Their in-house roasting program focuses on seasonal, light to medium roasts that emphasize sweetness and clarity. They have
direct relationships with farmers, so you’ll have the taste of high-quality beans. Their menu features pour-overs, espresso drinks, and seasonal creations, alongside food like house-made breakfasts and grab-and-go options from local bakeries.

Keeper Coffee

4515 SE 41st Avenue

Keeper Coffee PortlandKeeper Coffee is a lowkey local hangout that feels like your friend’s living room — with exceptional taste in coffee and design instead. Think reclaimed wood, soft colors, and plenty of light, plus a sprinkle of local art and plants. It’s a place where you can settle in with your laptop, sip a pour-over, and feel right at home. There’s even a book exchange corner for when you need a little reading material to go with your coffee. Keeper’s coffee program is simple but thoughtfully curated, with seasonal offerings and an emphasis on freshness. Plus, their business supports fair trade and sustainable practices. Keep it green and the coffee pristine!

Portland Coffee Roasters

815 SE Oak Street

Portland Coffee RoastersPortland Coffee Roasters has been a Portland staple since 1996. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation for sourcing great beans and keeping their environmental footprint small. Now they’re a part of the Portland community, always striving to balance top-quality coffee with sustainability and social impact.

What makes Portland Coffee Roasters stand out? Well, they’re big on relationships. They’ve worked directly with coffee farmers for years, making sure they pay fair prices and support the people who grow their beans. Sustainability is a big part of their game plan, too. They’re a Certified B Corporation, practice carbon-neutral shipping, and constantly look for ways to reduce waste. Oh, and their coffees are roasted in small batches to really bring out the unique flavors of each origin.

It’s not all about the beans, though. Their cafes are designed to be welcoming spaces. Whether you’re popping into their airport locations or enjoying a leisurely afternoon at one of their neighborhood spots, you’re guaranteed a comfy place to sip and relax. And their commitment to community goes beyond coffee; they host workshops, support local charities, and partner with schools.

Rimsky Korsakoffee House

707 SE 12th Avenue

Rimsky-Korsakoffee House is not your average coffee spot. It is in a spooky and charming Victorian-style building with rich history. Located in the Buckman neighborhood, it is one of the city’s longest-running coffeehouses, opened in 1980 by Goody Cable. Goody had been hosting classical music events in her home long before she decided to open the café, turning a 1902 haunted Craftsman-style house into a vibrant, communal space. The name? It’s a nod to the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

The vibe here is definitely unique: you can see the knickknacks, art, and quirky hanging objects all around. Tables are even named after composers, and some are said to be “haunted” in the most entertaining way—elevating, rotating, or vibrating as if to prove the spooky stories are true. With live classical music most nights, you’ll feel like you’re part of something both highbrow and lowbrow at the same time. And don’t leave without trying one of their famous desserts — Chocolate Raspberry Fools and Mocha Fudge Cakes are crowd favorites. It’s a place where you’ll leave a little happier, and maybe a bit more nervous, but in the best way possible.

Scott was the most lovely host I have ever had in my time using Airbnb; I highly recommend staying at his place whenever you find yourself near Portland. He was incredibly helpful, communicative and kind. The area was peaceful, but not far from most anything you would need/want to do during your stay. He deserves many thanks from me!
